Coos Co. Sheriff's Log, Nov. 13, 2013

Lost

News release from the Coos Co. Sheriff's Office.  "On 11-10-2013 Coos County Sheriffs Deputies responded to the area of Bear Flat road in the Coos County Forest, off Highway 101, for the report of a lost subject. Initial reports from the victim’s family members indicated that Thomas Morgan had gotten separated from his party while picking mushrooms. It was reported that the last time he was seen was in the morning hours. Upon further investigation it was learned that Mr. Morgan had actually been out over night, and had been separated from his party on 11-9-2013, the day prior to it being reported. Family members reported that they had phone contact with Mr. Morgan, who was certain that he knew where he was, he just could not get to the road. Family members called the Sheriff’s Office the following day when Mr. Morgan did not return.  The area of forest that Mr. Morgan was lost in was extremely thick, with dense brush, which made navigation and travel difficult. Sheriff’s Deputies assisted by a Search and Rescue K9 used a series of sound sweeps and Cell phone pings to locate Mr. Morgan. Mr. Morgan was fatigued and dehydrated, but in over all good condition. Members of Green Acres Fire and Millington Fire responded to assist with packing Mr. Morgan out of the dense forest.  Mr. Morgan had exhausted himself while attempting to self rescue and had to be carried out by assisting personnel. Mr. Morgan was treated on scene by paramedics and did not require further treatment.  The Coos County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind those, who enjoy the outdoors and spending time in the natural beauty of the Southern Oregon Coast to take some simple precautions and plan ahead. People, who go missing, don’t intend to get lost, but when they do they can lessen the effects by preplanning. Always tell someone where you’re going, and when you expect to return. Carry a signaling device, such as a whistle. Make sure you have water and a full battery on your cell phone. Remember that a cell phone is not a failsafe device for communication, and certainly not for navigation. Most importantly, if you ever find yourself, or a loved one lost, notify law enforcement right away.

Identity Theft

News release from the Coos Co. Sheriff's Office.  "On the evening of November 7, 2013 at about 11 PM, while assisting Douglas County Sheriff’s Office in an investigation, Coos County Sheriff’s Deputies stopped a vehicle attempting to locate a person of interest in the Douglas County’s investigation.  The deputies contacted the operator of the vehicle, James Rictor and the passenger, Julie Farnham.  The person of interest was found not in the vehicle.  During the course of the stop and investigation, probable cause was developed to believe Ms. Farnham was in possession of a Bill of Sale for a vehicle that the two were transporting that had a forged signature upon it.  Further investigation revealed that Ms. Farnham, having no lawful right to do so, was attempting to sell the vehicle in question using the forged Bill of Sale.  Ms. Farnham purported the signature upon the Bill of Sale to be that of Mark Burgess.  Mr. Burgess was contacted and affirmed that his signature on the Bill of Sale was forged.  Julie Farnham was arrested and taken into custody for Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument II, Identity Theft and Attempted Theft by Deception.  She was transported to the Coos County Jail and booked.  Mr. Rictor was released on traffic citations for no Drivers License and Driving Uninsured. Coos County Sheriff’s Deputies were assisted in the investigation by Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and Oregon State Police."
