A gold 1994 Honda Accord, operated by 39-year old Jorene J. Smith, Coos Bay, was eastbound on Hwy. 42, milepost 8, when it drifted into the westbound lane May 7, 7:35 a.m. According to an Oregon State Police report, 40-year old Matthew D. Fields, Coquille, was operating a black 1997 Toyota Tacoma westbound. He locked up his brakes in an attempt to avoid the oncoming vehicle, but was unable to do so. The left front corner of the Toyota struck the left side of the Honda sending the pickup into a spin. It skidded across the highway and struck the rear wheels of a loaded log truck trailer that was parked off the highway on the eastbound shoulder. Smith had to be extricated from her vehicle and was transported by ambulance to Coquille Valley Hospital where she was treated and released for minor injuries. Fields was transported by his wife to CVH where he was evaluated after complaining of pain.
A passenger inside of a silver 1999 Toyota Corolla, stopped for "excessive speed," April 29, 11:04 a.m., Hwy. 101, milepost 234, was arrested after admitting to possessing less than one ounce of marijuana. According to an OSP report, Mathew Brockway, Coos Bay, was taken into custody on a warrant charging Contempt of Court from Lane Co. Circuit Court in Eugene, and also charged with PCS Less than an Oz. Marijuana. He was transported to the Coos Co. Jail at Coquille.
The operator of a silver 1999 Honda Civic reported he dozed off before the vehicle crossed the southbound lane of Hwy. 101, milepost 278.1 and struck a utility pole. According to an OSP report, "the pole was severed and the vehicle totaled." The southbound lane was blocked while a tow truck removed the vehicle. Sixty-three year old Paul D. Bodtke, Port Orford, refused medical assistance, but was later transported to Southern Coos Hospital in Bandon for evaluation. He was also cited for Failure to Drive within his Lane.
A bronze 2007 PT Cruiser didn't stop for a red light in time on Hwy. 101 at Flanagan in the Bunker Hill area of Coos Bay May 3, 9:49 p.m., and struck a silver 2006 Kia utility vehicle in the intersection. According to an OSP report, 32-year old Sarah M. Smith, Philomath, was operating the PT Cruiser while 35-year old Tammy L. Hilding, Coos Bay, was operating the Kia. Hilding complained of discomfort but declined transport. Smith was warned for Careless Driving and cited for Failure to Obey a Traffic Control Device. Both vehicles were towed from the accident scene.
Drugs, gun & cash
A blue 1995 Honda Prelude, stopped for a traffic violation at Bowron and Lakeland Drive in Lakeside May 4, 12:41 a.m., led to the discovery of drugs, a stolen handgun and a large amount of U.S. currency. According to an OSP report, a CBPD narcotic detection K9 was brought in and helped discover approximately 17g of methamphetamine, the 9mm pistol and the cash. The driver, 34-year old Vernon Lee Johnson, and the passenger, 33-year old Sarah Susan Tucker, both of Lakeside, were released from the scene. "All charges will be referred to the Coos County District Attorney's Office."
Hit & Run
Law enforcement officers in Coos Co. are keeping an eye out for a possible large 1970s or 1980s Ford passenger car with a broken out driver's side headlight and brake lamp that may have been involved in a hit and run accident on Hwy. 101 between Medohill Lane and Beaverhill Road that damaged a guard rail May 4 about 6:18 a.m. According to an OSP report, the vehicle was southbound when it suddenly veered left across the northbound lane and crashed into the guardrail. "There is suspected heavy damage to the front driver's side of the vehicle." A witness reported that at or around 2:30 a.m., he witnessed the vehicle being operated erratically by speeding up and slamming on the brakes. No suspects have been identified. Charges under consideration include: Failure of Driver to Perform Duties - Property Damage, Criminal Mischief II and Offensive Littering within 1,000 Feet of aWaterway.
